October 2008

Somehow it’s hard to clear one’s mind of the two big E’s staring in our faces—Elections and Economy, so I won’t even try. As President of APTi, however, I do not need to run for reelection, nor am I a lame duck since I’ll have the privilege of serving as Past President for a year when Suzanne Brue takes my place on January 1. We will continue to build on the platform we’ve already established.

I.        We have a plan and it is transparent. You can view our revised mission statement and current strategic plan with action items at http://www.aptinternational.org/content.asp?p=5. This month during our virtual board meeting, the Board reviewed progress on action items. At our January 2009 face-to-face meeting, we will retire completed goals, discuss moving forward on others, and determine whether any new action items are needed given the new training and economic environments in which we are operating.

II.     We are reaching across the aisles and forming partnerships. APTi is firmly interested in working with any organization involved in promoting the practical application and ethical use of psychological type. In the next few weeks we plan to announce that APTi members will receive discounts on workshops offered by Type Resources, OKA, Inc., and 16-types.com and that Qualifying.org will provide a discount on their new Golden Type Indicator bridge program and on certification for a new Enneagram instrument, the Breckenridge Type Indicator. CPP, Inc., offers our members steep discounts on their skillsone.com accounts, and, with CAPT and 16-Types.com, have already stepped up as significant sponsors of our 2009 Biennial Conference. We anticipate forming even more partnerships in the next months.

III.   We have all our constituencies in mind. We know that our members include people from North America and 43 other countries, independent consultants and corporate human resource managers, people using type in settings as diverse as high-tech startups and hospitals, students and mid-career professionals and retirees. Note how our Bulletin themes, online courses, and training and conference programming reach out to our diverse membership.

IV.  We understand technology and are looking for ways to use it to serve our members. Check for new opportunities to take online courses—and to submit proposals to facilitate those courses. Read current and past issues of the electronic Journal of Psychological Type. Browse The Bulletin of Psychological Type as well—see the archived issues at http://www.aptinternational.org/content.asp?p=33. Participate in the Coaching Special Interest Group (SIG). Contact Jennifer LaChance, our new Director of Interest Areas, about starting a SIG that matches your networking needs.

V.     We are looking backward and ahead. Our past, grounded in the work of Jung and Myers and their contributions to self-awareness, growth, and appreciation of differences, form the foundation of our mission. Our future lies in making our organization useful—by carrying out our mission so that worldwide, more and more people understand the usefulness of what we do and call on our members for assistance in making constructive use of differences.
