 Coaching Using Whole Type

by Susan Nash

This training is a partnership between APT NYC and APTi. Please contact Skita Mohan with questions.

Psychological type is an invaluable tool in coaching clients. Research has shown that use of the Myers Briggs Type Indicator® in performance coaching tends to be limited to deciding best-fit type and trying to get to grips with non-preferred sides. In the Coaching Using Whole Type session you will learn how to use the three lenses of type (Temperament, Interaction Style and Cognitive Processes) to supplement your existing coaching practices and provide more depth to the coaching relationship.

In-depth session description

This session will demonstrate how to verify best-fit type with clients plus provide an opportunity to conduct an in-depth coaching conversation using facilitative type-related questions. The session will be interactive, fast-paced, engaging and hands-on using case studies, role-plays, team exercises, open space activities and large group discussion. Individuals will be asked to bring a real-life coaching scenario with them to discuss at the session. Each person will receive a comprehensive coaching reference guide to refer to after the program, and will be given access to web-based follow up tools, resources and activities to refine skills and directly apply the principles to their own environment.

Learning Objectives:

At the end of this session, individuals will be able to:

  • Clearly articulate the benefits of Temperament, Interaction Style and Cognitive Processes in the coaching journey.
  • Use the concepts of Temperament, Interaction Style and Cognitive Processes to help clients verify best-fit type.
  • Adapt their coaching style to build a more effective coaching relationship.
  • Use Whole Type to provide a rich coaching experience with clients to motivate and engage all clients.
  • Flex their coaching approach to different clients' needs, energy and thinking style.

Temperament is a separate and yet complementary theory to Psychological type. Temperament may be defined as a pattern of needs, values, talents and behaviors that underlies your way of acting and being in the world. Originally integrated with psychological type by David Keirsey, and brought into the 21st century by Linda Berens, temperament provides additional understanding of core drivers and innate stress responses. In this interactive session you will:

  • Learn about the four temperaments and what each expects from the coaching process.
  • Analyze your temperament and understand your innate gifts and potential blind spots as a coach.
  • Explore how to build commonality with different temperaments.

Interaction Style is another separate and yet complementary theory to Psychological type. Interaction Style is a pattern of physical energy, pace, movement and outward behaviors correlated with mental aims, beliefs and innate talents that underlie the ways in which you might engage with others to get your needs met. Based on William Marston's work, Linda Berens was able to articulate how this theory linked with psychological type.In this interactive session you will:

  • Learn about the four Interaction Style and how each naturally approaches the coaching process.
  • Analyze your Interaction Style and understand your innate gifts and potential blindspots as a coach.
  • Explore how to flex your style to build a more cohesive coaching relationship.

19th February

Morning Session : Coaching using Cognitive Processes: 9:30 - 12:30

(Coffee Break : 10:30 - 10:45 a.m.)

When you've completed the MBTI® qualification program, it is very easy to focus on the four dichotomies alone. However the "four-letter code" was created by Myers and Briggs as a short cut for understanding which of the eight cognitive processes you naturally access and in which hierarchy. Understanding these eight functions (originally described by Carl Jung) provides type practitioners with innovative new ways to use type within organizations, adds another area of depth, and can overcome the objection "Oh I have done MBTI". In this interactive session you will:

  • Learn about the eight cognitive processes (Extraverted Sensing - Se, Introverted Sensing -  Si, Extraverted Intuiting  - Ne, etc.
  • Know the hierarchy of functions for all 16 types.
  • Understand how this knowledge can be applied in coaching and working with others.
