Ann Scott Root - The Inner Lives of Js and Ps

Category: APTi Chapter Events

This virtual program is presented by the Bay Area Association for Psychological Type (BAAPT) chapter.

The J-P dimension of type has traditionally been viewed as distinguishing how people orient toward and interact with their outer world. It was, in fact, Katherine Briggs’ observation of different behavioral patterns that formed the basis for melding the J-P distinction with Jung’s three original dichotomies. Throughout the sub- sequent decades, the resultant perspective and conversation regarding this dimension have therefore understandably focused almost exclusively on observable behavioral traits. However, the inner forces that give rise to J-P behavioral differences have never been adequately explored and discussed. Without such a wholistic understanding, societal biases toward conventional emphases on structure, planning, decision making and control as the sole means to success continue to abound.

Considering that the J-P dimension – how we live our lives on a day-to-day basis – is so central to our human experience, and considering that J-P differences are perhaps the most significant source of interpersonal tension of all type differences, a deeper understanding of the inner-world energies and patterns underlying our outer-world J-P behaviors can potentially transform both our intrapersonal and interpersonal relationships.

In this workshop we will use both depth typology and living systems lenses to look at the dynamic psychic energies that inform and drive J-P behaviors. By examining the nature of the energies and function-attitudes that underlie J-P behavioral traits, we will peer into the inner experience of each type in relation to time, task, and self as we develop an understanding of the innate wiring, and subjective drives, aims, approaches, methods and desired experiences of both J and P types.

Those who use type both personally and professionally will come to:

Understand the core psychological needs and drives of the J and P types.

Develop empathy for what each experiences and how each goes about meeting their needs.

Develop an appreciation for the inner strengths and challenges of both sides of the J-P dimension.

Appreciate the value of the unconventional P approach to getting things done and transform the prevailing labels of perceiving types as procrastinators, lazy, disorganized, messy, and late.

Understand the futility and potential injury of a one-sided behaviorist perspective which concludes that behaviors themselves are highly malleable and therefore capable of sustainable change through skills training, behavioral interventions, and/or cognitive decision and willpower.

Learn how to communicate and collaborate more effectively with others who both share and differ from one’s own J-P dimension.

This presentation is geared to intermediate and advanced levels of type knowledge.
